Moving Tips
Moving can be a stressful time. It doesn't matter whether you're moving locally, across the country or even across a state. Planning ahead can eliminate worries and make the move a successful and safe one. Here are some helpful tips that we have found to be useful.
- Plan ahead. Start deciding which items you are actually going to keep and which ones you will be discarding. This eliminates packing items that you no longer need.
- Choose one room in your home or apartment to begin the packing process.
- Pack a few boxes at a time and be sure to mark its contents and destination room.
- Mail a change of address card to your local post office.
- Make arrangements to have utilities discontinued and schedule a start-up date for new service at your new location.
- Gather important documents, jewelry and safety deposit box. Pack these items in a place where they can easily be accessed. Take them with you and not on the moving truck.
- If you are driving to your new location out of state, pack an overnight bag with bare necessities, such as: a change of clothes, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc.
Packing tips:
Books
Should be packed in small sturdy boxes which will allow for easy moving and handling. Do not pack books in empty drawers or leave them in bookshelves.
Collectables/Small items
Should be wrapped individually and packed in cartons. Cushion them well with newspaper and always place the heaviest items towards the bottom of the box.
China
All delicate and fragile items should be wrapped individually. Larger pieces should be placed at the bottom, with smaller plates, cups and saucers towards the top. Plates should be packed vertically with pads of paper in between them.
